Though earlier fortifications were built on the same spot, the current keep was built by the MacCarthy of Muskerry dynasty, a cadet branch of the Kings of Desmond, and dates from 1446. Blarney Stone is found among the machicolations of the castle. Besides, you should not miss Blarney house, a small forest, Wishing Steps, Witch kitchen in Barney Castle.

A fairy tale of Blarney Castle
People is kissing the Blarney Stone
Blarney Stone, which makes the castle a really popular attraction. You can’t enter the castle without viewing the stone, which is believed to do wonders for its visitors who take time to kiss it. Tourists visiting Blarney Castle may hang upside-down over a sheer drop to kiss the stone because the Blarney Stone is below the battlement. Legend whoever kisses the stone will be gifted with an amazing eloquence that one will never be at a loss for words. No wonder it’s called the Stone of Eloquence!

Surrounding the castle are extensive gardens. There are paths touring  he grounds with signs pointing out the various attractions such as several natural rock formations which have been given fanciful names, such as Druid's Circle, Witch's Cave and the Wishing Steps. There is a place full of fairy tale romantic is the Wishing the stairs (Wishing Steps). After a bit of a walk away from the castle, we came upon an area called the "witch's kitchen," in which was the "witch's stone." They say that the Blarney Castle witch is entrapped in this stone, and visitors leave small gifts on the stone to appease the witch (little coins, flowers, etc).

Below the witch's kitchen is a garden area, with what is called the 'wishing steps.' The myth is that if you walk backwards up the wishing steps with your eyes closed, and repeating a wish in your mind, it will come true. We all tried this, despite the danger of walking backwards up a set of slippery, ancient stairs. It was quite amusing!
